The LCCF is expected to begin operations in 2026 and will have the largest academic supercomputer dedicated to open-scientific research in the NSF portfolio. Named "Horizon," the supercomputer will have a 10-times performance improvement for simulation over the Frontera that is housed at TACC. TACC is at UT's J.J. Pickle Campus in North Austin near The Domain, and a new data center will be built in Round Rock, with a co-location partner announced soon, officials said.
"We are experiencing a trend where an exponentially increasing number of problems can be solved by computing in general and artificial intelligence in particular," UT President Jay Hartzell said in a statement.
