This is the 3rd year I have been organising my school’s Spelling Bee. After two years under my belt, I decided to get my act together and zero in on the various rules that I hope students could learn before they graduate from my school.
These words are targeted towards 13-16-year-olds. The words may come across as simple for you, and some of them really are. I took into consideration the fact that these self-conscious teenagers would be demonstrating their spelling chips in front of the entire school and wanted to set them up for success. I also wanted them to spell words which they are likely to use in their educational journey.
Without further ado, here are the words and associated rules:
- | 13-14-year-olds | 15-16-year-olds |
---|---|---|
Drop the e | discouraging | communicating |
Doubling consonant | trekking | regrettable |
Change y to ies | opportunities | possibilities |
-tion | destination | inspirational |
Q n U stick like glue | quirky | quality |
-able | delectable | commendable |
-ly | additionally | authentically |
-ence | resilience | assistance |
-ity | nationality | individuality |
