The concern with perserving narratives has always been present with the mainstream media but in the last 10 years it has been a gigantic problem.
The corporate media has no shame. When did they become so brazen? 2005? 2010? 2015?
I think it coincided with the popularity of Facebook and Twitter.
We saw in October 2020 how the media could suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story by suspending NY Post Twitter account. That was the critical first step.
Journalists and media personalities cannot leave Twitter or X no matter how much they dislike Musk. I remember so many posted a 'final' tweet and said goodbye but within a year they were all back lol
According to Sharyl Atkisson, the term 'fake news' started in 2015 or 2016 with Obama not Trump. Obama wanted Google and Facebook et al to censor or suppress 'fake news'.

It's tough to say. To some extent, they've always been flagrant liars, but we didn't have the tools to catch them. However, it does seem like narrative preservation has been their primary task since the War on Terror began.

Washington Post hated Agnew and Nixon. Ben Bradley was a friend of JFK and RFK. Same with Katherine Graham.
The corporate media is an extension of Hollywood sometimes.
Reagan? He drove the media insane with tax cuts, deregulation, supply side, welfare queens, evil empire and Star Wars.
Nixon and Reagan received a double dose because they were residents of California. Their campaign headquarters on election night used to be the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
The tools to catch their lies can also be used to accentuate their lies. Network force multiple effect.

This is why decentralized social media can undermine mainstream media’s political propaganda by providing a platform that resists censorship, ensures transparency, promotes diverse voices, and allows for direct user engagement without centralized control. This openness and accountability can expose and counteract biased narratives and misinformation effectively.

What didn't exist before, in particular, was the ability for viral memes to instantly lampoon dumb propaganda.
The best counterattack against a powerful complex machine is lots of cheap shrapnel.

Similar story in the UK. Even the newer ‘alt media’ platforms play the same game. It’s very frustrating.

What are the big alt media platforms in the UK?
My view is that there are inherent incentive problems faced by new outlets that lead them to this outcome, so it's not surprising when new ones turn into the same things.

It has always been this way, though. Bidens decline is detrimental to our society, trumps shooting is just selling the news. They have to sell something, right? In order to stay relevent.

It's not always a progressive narrative, but otherwise I think you're right. The news has serious incentive problems and I've never seen a credible solution to them.

You have to take everything with a grain of salt. But it is important to keep up with recent news. Just need to understand they are always trying to sell you an angle.
