We're still so early!
Every time I use something cool and "for free" i look for the tip jar in BTC. This is the forum for the torrent client in Ubuntu by default and people have been begging them to accept donations in BTC since 2012! I can't even imagine what they could've funded if they hodled a little. I was going to contact them to ask for a donation link in BTC, but is it worthy? They're still using PayPal ffs.
It reminds me of a talk from Antonopoulos where he says that his first reaction to BTC was "hah! Nerd money" . But the guys writing code for the Torrent client distributed in Linux are the very definition of nerds, that is, the nerd community are not even using it. Why?
I tried once to contribute to ublock with BTC because I couldn't in any other way. I wrote them an email asking them to accept the Bitcoin and they thanked me kindly but stated that they "didn't have means to accept it". I could not believe it. BTC could so easily be the blood of OSS and they refuse... WHY?? 💔

I used transmission back in the day. I haven't torrented in ages. What torrent clients are people using now?

Transmission still good. Qbittorrent for windows. Deluge also good and cross platform and for seed boxes.
Torrents have been having a (humble) comeback since the paid streaming services started multiplying.

There isn't one nerd community, there's a lot of little ones that are each really into their own nerdy thing and that's it.

Hacker News and Reddit are most prominent examples

decentralized and fragmented
not to mention the internecine conflicts and civil wars between nerd communities
too many NPCs

Torrents! Man, I used to torrent tv shows back in the day. And movies! You could get some really nice Blue Ray high definition ones online. They took forever to download though haha

My sister got a really bad virus from a torrent, it literally fried her computer in 30 minutes. I never torrented because of that.
