In the 1980s there was a skate band (punk / hardcore) called Jodie Fosters Army. This was name after the shooter who tried to kill Ronald Reagan. So to put into perspective shooting a president and the 1st amendment I would like to put this on the table.
At the time that Ronald Reagan was shot the news came out with the story that the shooter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hinckley_Jr.) John Hinkley, Jr. (Always a three name person.) tried to impress the actress Jodie Foster. This, of course goes back to the point that the news of M5M actually affects disturbed people and they can have common people do the dirty work by influencing then to violence.
But...
We also have a country where you can name your band after the assassin and actually be successful! Literally in my day there were many skateboard plebs who had a JFA (Jodie Fosters Army) sticker on their skateboard. The band even had their own skateboard line. Any other country of the planet would have killed these people. As much as you might hate the United States, you may even hate us for the vast prison population, you cannot argue that we also do not kill people for freedom of speech. Not only do we not kill them but we also do not hurt them financially until now.
Now the authoritarian state has more power than it ever did. It even censured the president, Donald J. Trump.
I'm not going to say that Ronald Reagan was a good man. Not at all. But I will say that that a president, including Joe Biden, should have the best security afforded on the planet. The US Government is the largest employer on the planet. It should have the best security for all who hold the office past and present. We also should have the best comic voices and the best artists.
Recently, https://www.theguardian.com/culture/article/2024/jul/16/jack-black-puts-tenacious-d-on-hold-after-bandmates-trump-shooting-comment , Tenacious D cancelled their tour due to a statement from a band member that made a comment that he wished the shooter did not miss. This would not be such a grand statement accept for the fact that the Democrat Party enforced 1st amendment censuring against a president and is complacent when it comes to the shooting of former president.
Our country is is our country and we need to understand that we are great when our country can say and do what we want. I've known and served with Secret Service guys. They are very serious. When I was serving in the Army National Guard I served with members of Bill Clinton's secrete service. These guys did not like Clinton but... They also never trashed him and they also never would say or do anything against him. To them it was a privilege to protect the president. Me, personally, only joined the military because I believed that Clinton was a good man. I have later learned that he was a criminal. My fellow Guardsmen and women, many of them liked and dislike the president. At the end of one operation we even had someone imitate Clinton's voice over the radio. We all laughed. No one got killed.
