I mined shitcoins with Bitcoin Lightning payout on my GPU a year ago. It was not only not profitable ... it was such a waste.
Letting my phone run AFK a pay2earn Bitcoin game earned more money and that also was only a few hundred sats per week. Completely not worth it.

build out a mine when price per terahash is less than $50 for new gen miners up to the point where your electricity cost is equal to the amount you allocated for dollar cost average.
stop buying bitcoin and pay only for electricity
never pay for a miner with bitcoin unless you are immediately buying and replacing.

I’ll probably never mind at home unless I find a good way to deal with the noise and heat.

This has been a pretty bad year for bitcoin mining, and it will probably continue to get worse- unless the price of bitcoin doubles with every halvening, or the cost of power goes down.
If you have extra CPU horsepower (and electricity) to donate, you can try your hand at monero mining (which is also unprofitable) now with P2Pool support.

I run an S1 intermittently during Winter to warm the place and help dry washing. Doin' fine, not making any money, but contributing in a way multiplied by millions would make a difference.

Mining with raspberry pi 4 and usb sticks is fun. Haven’t mined any blocks yet but still waiting. Gpu mining tor sats is also not too bad. Especially integrating with LN is great.
