i previously subscribed to a user & also a territory to test the functionality... all of the sudden my notifications were always present, but they were never for replies to my own posts/messages.

my recommendation is use different colors for each type of notification, for instance:

red - replies to things i post orange - zaps received blue - posts in a territory i'm subscribed to green - posts by a user i'm subscribed to
