Wow, they are really taxed over there. And not complaining? Was it like this before the euro?

We brought it on ourselves. In high trust homogeneous societies, not too much taxes were wasted at first.
I think tax pressure levels were unrelated to the introduction of the euro.
Edit: Except for maybe Greece (and Spain?) who were completely unsustainable with early pensions and a lot of tax-evasion. But that's an outsiders perspective.
