I'm not sure I'd describe talking about an assassination attempt as political, per se. It just seems like an interesting news event.

I don't think so. I think "political" should describe things that are about policy differences, campaign strategies, polling, political philosophy, etc.
If Barack Obama bought a basketball team, I wouldn't think of that as political news.
Trump might be the most famous person in the history of the world and some kid shot him in the head. That's big news, regardless of what he was doing or why he's so famous.
