The occupational hazard about being a teacher is that you never truly relax. Even when you visit landmarks and places of interest on your weekends, you can’t stop thinking about how to help your students.
As an ex-Science teacher, I thought that the team at the Resort World Sentosa aquarium did a great job in educating young kids about fish. I mean, just look at these visuals. Concise, colourful and educational. They enhanced the value visitors derived from their visit to the aquarium.
Actually, a common misconception among elementary school students is that they think of whales and dolphins as fish, not mammals. If they have learnt that the defining characteristic of fishes is their gills, they wouldn’t make this misconception in their primary education because they may have internalised the fact that whales and dolphins have blowholes to aid their breathing.
In Singapore’s education system, students are expected to know the difference between how humans breathe through their lungs and how fishes breathe through their gills. Another thing to note is in the arena of adaptations. How the streamlined body shape of various fishes enable them to swim faster.
That’s my education about fishes for you!
