On March 11, 1958, a United States Air Force B-47 bomber accidentally dropped an unarmed Mk-6 atomic bomb on a farm in Mars Bluff, South Carolina (United States). The bomb was twice as powerful as the one that destroyed Hiroshima, but it didn't have its fissile nuclear core installed at the time. When it hit the ground, the bomb's conventional high explosives detonated, injuring six people and damaging several buildings. The Gregg family's home was particularly affected, with the house caving in on the mother and leaving her with cuts. The Air Force was sued by the victims' family, who received $54,000 in compensation, which is equivalent to $570,270 in 2023.
