As our grocery bill goes up each week, I have started considering how to pre-purchase in bulk. My main motivation is that food is only getting more expensive, so I want to buy now to save! Here are my reasons to hesitate: -I love fresh fruit and veg and find canned options to be flavorless, mushy and less nutritious. -Potential of inadvertently wasting food by not eating bulk purchases before they go bad. -Carbs seem to top most lists of recommended items to bulk purchase (beans, rice, pastas, etc.)- which doesn’t seem super balanced.
How have you benefitted (financially and hopefully nutritionally) by bulk purchasing food? Any helpful tips or best items to buy in bulk?
I buy about half our groceries in bulk (Sams/Costco). Almond milk, butter, yogurt, beef, chicken, pork, olive oil, coffee, nuts to name a few. I typically freeze 3/4 of the meat bought in bulk - packaged in smaller portions and thawed on a weekly basis.
Most of the produce is still purchased from a local grocery store or farmers market (my garden has been languishing this year.) I've been considering buying beef locally as I have many local producers and butchers - just need a dedicated freezer. I don't think that would necessarily save money, but the quality is probably better and I'd rather support local producers.
If I hadn't switched to buying many items in bulk, my grocery bill would easily be double what it was 5 years ago. Having a teenage boy in the house admittedly doesn't help there.

My garden has been awful this year too! Just low production all around… Maybe need to supplement the soil more aggressively next season. My dream is to produce all my own produce- been flipping through “Veg in One Bed” by Huw Richards for inspiration.

I had a couple good years and then I got entirely absorbed by lightning development. I've got some strawberries, asparagus, a few herbs and a pear tree - literally just the perennials at this point.

Is it food prices going up or Fiat value going down?

Also, have you ever thought of growing your own food?

Costco is the way to go if available. Everything is bulk and they have everything you need to have a healthy mixed diet

This post reminds me that before my family emigrated from Venezuela to Peru, we bought bags of flour, pasta and rice, not to save money but because the price increased every day and inflation made money go further every day.

Indeed, in a lunaticoin podcast the interviewee is a Venezuelan who talks about how Bitcoin and buying food in bulk helped him overcome the great food shortage crisis that occurred between 2016-17 in Venezuela. The interviewee is P_hold

You should buy noodles and store them as much as possible.

I order mainly dried fruits, different nuts, cacao nibs, cereals, coconut flakes etc. in bulk. Preferably in organic quality. This is really worth it and it does not rot.

You can't by every food in bulk. Your technique is good tho I guess you should buy dry vegetables as well
