We artists are indestructible; even in a prison, or in a concentration camp, I would be almighty in my own world of art, even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell.
–Pablo Picasso
I was thinking about this last night while watching Papillon, who was incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit. He may not have painted pictures with his wet tongue on the dusty floor of his cell. But he had a vision where he vowed never to waste his life again. His indestructible spirit not only allowed him to escape, but also serves as a reminder that freedom is a gift that should never be taken for granted.
Unfortunately, we take too many things for granted. Perhaps during the covid we realised what it means to lose our freedom and feel powerless to accept the decisions of our governments. But we have already forgotten that time..
