We artists are indestructible; even in a prison, or in a concentration camp, I would be almighty in my own world of art, even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell.
–Pablo Picasso
I was thinking about this last night while watching Papillon, who was incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit. He may not have painted pictures with his wet tongue on the dusty floor of his cell. But he had a vision where he vowed never to waste his life again. His indestructible spirit not only allowed him to escape, but also serves as a reminder that freedom is a gift that should never be taken for granted.
