I don't think you can count on them to police themselves. It has to be in their interest to represent normal people's interests.
I have a bunch of half-baked ideas for this. One of the simple ones is to pay politicians whatever the average household income is of their constituents. That would give them a reason to make things better for normal people and stop enriching the oligarchs in NY and DC.
That is an interesting idea. But how many would want to be politicians if that was the price of their service?

How many of these creeps do you want to be attracted to politics?
The original idea was not to have career politicians, but rather respected members of the community sort of taking turns acting as its representative.

Right, but you still need to attract the right people. If you get someone that is bad, it will be bad for the people they represent.

Maybe this could just be a bonus added onto their current salaries. It would be a trivial expense if it actually did anything.

That isnt a bad idea. It would be nice if a younger generation was able to get into the house and senate. But I guess age doesnt matter if there is a term limit.
