Coded language refers to a situation when, through an established system of symbols, codes, or substitutions, words or phrases cannot have, or appear to have, an obvious meaning. This may be used in order to keep things secret, create an in-group identity, or play with one another. In any case, most coded language depends on shared knowledge or keys among the interacting parties, and in effect it is only readable by those who already know it. This can range from simple ciphers and cryptograms to complex algorithms, as in digital encryption today. And in literature and rhetoric, a fancier way of saying that is that coded language could serve also as a tool for subtext: for authors to convey meanings or commentary beneath the surface of their text.
