In the past, beginning of this year we had the MSM contest, that created a lot of confusion, crazy-mania, discrepancies, assmilking, frustration etc It end up by being removed / reduced to daily MSM - the leaderboard.
Lately, again this created some discussions around a stacker that found his own way of playing the game. The opinions now are diverse in regards what were the true intentions of this stacker. I tried to stay away from the drama, being just a spectator.
But then came into my mind a proposal: why not removing entirely the whole leaderboard?
I see SN as a place where YOU PAY TO POST (say something) and not the way around (earn sats to shitpost). Sats are really scarce and those who incentive this behavior (assmilking) do not really appreciate the real value of 1 sat. SN is really powerful on both sides, but let's try to keep the balance, otherwise will end up in a disaster.
All this drama with "why the X earn more than me" or "is cheating the algo" etc it only distract from what really matters: Bitcoin adoption, learning new stuff about Bitcoin.
As I said many times here: spend wisely your sats. Some could say "hey you are hypocrite, you earned much more than many others from SN...". Yes, I earned a lot from SN, but I never asked for sats. people were giving me sats as appreciation for what am I doing on SN. I always tried to give back to those that post also good content (wisely). Also I paid electricity bills with sats from SN, to those in need and onboard many others.
But for me SN was always a way to pay to post content.
You must keep in mind one important aspect:
  • 1 upvote = 1 sat
  • 1 downvote = 1 sat
  • if you want to give more sats it will not affect the votes, it is JUST your appreciation to OP.
That being said, from now on I will go dark, hiding my activity from leaderboard.
YES57.4%
NO36.2%
Maybe other way6.4%
47 votes \ poll ended
I think we can have our cake and eat it too.
  • No leaderboard
  • Stackers see only their own stats, including daily rank
I find it useful have those stats at hand. Paying to post is the fundamental feature, but making a positive return is the signal that the community is getting value from it. Otherwise, it's spam.
I also think new stackers can be inspired by seeing how much can be earned in rewards, but they don't need to know who is getting them or exactly how.
reply
In short you mean that everyone go to dark and hide only Sats Reward remain visible. That seems ok to me.
reply
Yeah, although either way is fine with me. Being able to see everything creates more accountability for the rewards system. There have been bugs that were only caught because stackers noticed weird patterns.
reply
Sorry for the remedial question, but what is “assmilking?” (Not wanting Google to retain that one as part of my search history, lol)!
reply
hahaha yeah is a term used here on SN by the old stackers... when somebody is trying to get more sats from others, with specific techniques of sockpuppet accounts, voting with other accounts or using anon to create a false activity on specific items and many other ways. Their focus is only on how to get sats in exchange of nothing. And you can see this just by watching some stackers activity.
reply
I can see benefits to both.
Without it, stackers would focus more on the content, pre MSM days. With it, stackers can at least see if someone is gaming the site more than usual, until they go into hiding.
Maybe k00b is waiting for the day that all 100 spots are hiding on the leaderboard, then he will take it down, hahah.

I completely agree with your comment. That's why I posted this: #680639

90 percent of people are here for satiety. Only 10 percent are here to learn and have fun, and everyone here knows that. But if SN is to grow, SN will only grow if all types of people are here. It may be that people have a different view than I do. But this is what I believe

I am curious if this is accurate… when I joined SN, my motivation was in search a new venue for good content. I knew that one is incentivized to post high quality by earning sats, but wasn’t even aware of the leaderboard. I suppose I just don’t understand the motivation behind the leaderboard- accountability? Bragging rights? If someone is discerning enough to earn more rewards by targeting the highest quality content and zapping it, aren’t the sats enough reward without posting a ranking?
reply
SN will only grow if all types of people are here.
I don't know. There is a strong argument to disallow shitcoinery, useless bots and things like hate speech here.
reply
I think some randomisation in how the algorithm works would resolve much of this drama. Say there are 5 different variants on how sats get distributed. People trying to game the system would not know which day their specific trick is going to work hence decreasing the incentive to apply said trick.

When I joined this platform, my idea was only about stacking, but if you look at my recent post, you will see that it is a good idea to share generously in my interest because, at the end of the day, I get rewarded.
What a lovely SN concept

Where is this drama you speak of? It's not in my experience of SN at all

Interesting!

I answered yes.
Remove the ability to hide sats stacked.
Add fuzzing.
Treat it as a karma score. Treat downzaps as subtractions to that score.
reply
BIG YES, and I've mentioned many times to remove it.

Are you Darth's suck puppet account. I've only seen you sock up to him...

My response to the SN Leaderboard was less dramatic. I basically ignored it. Milking sats is not why I am here. But I do see your points. It shifts focus from Community to a kind of Competition or earnings platform.
reply
I remember you being against hiding, what has changed since then for you to now be in favor of hiding?
reply
I still do not want to hide my activity. But I do not want to be included in that drama of "hey look how is doing that stacker...". Removing the leaderboard will make all of us hidden.
btw, you kind of slowdown your shitposting :)
reply
There could be an option to hide it only in the leaderboard . I've had less time for SN, so my shitposting has gone down :)
reply
I agree with your point of view. I think it would be beneficial to remove leaderboard. Then you will get the surprise following morning.
reply
stackers will be more focused on the content, than the numbers...

I like how the classification is currently!! and it is also a way to incentivize those of us who work and make good use of S.Nđź‘Ť
reply
I don’t mind the leaderboard but the estimated sats for each stacker should be removed.
reply
I mean just looking at the board right now the top 5 are all hidden and if I remember correctly often a lot of those at or near the top tend to be so yeah I am not sure what purpose it serves. So either you remove it or you get rid of being annon which I feel even more people would be against.
reply
You are absolutely right, SN should always be a space where good content is consumed, whatever its nature, and where quality is rewarded. I have never seen a platform where the end user rewards the content creator and the contributor.
reply
I can say for a fact that I dont do that. But it would be interesting if there was an invisible leadership board. Then people couldnt really game it. They wouldnt know until 0000 where they are, once the rewards are distributed.
