Technically the decision was about admissions. Diversity is ok as long as admissions is not based on racial preferences. At least in theory. 

The latest figures from brown and Harvard and MIT are still too diverse. Less so than in previous years but higher than merit based criteria

Good. A worthy effort to support diversity, when historically certain groups were disadvantaged, demographics are changing, etc.

Obviously a very trick thing to do well and there will be mixed results, but that's the case with a lot of things.
