Yes it seems to be a far superior form of nuclear power generation.
China appears to be set to use it to gain a significant trade and strategic advantage by using it and exporting Thorium based generation plants.

Thorium-based nuclear energy will prevail over Uranium, here are some of the advantages:
- Thorium fuel cycles offer attractive features such as lower levels of waste generation.
- The use of thorium in most reactor types provides additional safety margins.
- Existing long-term nuclear waste (240,000 years or more) can be “burned” in the thorium reactor to become short-term nuclear waste (less than 500 years)
