Once, when I was childless and carefree, I won a free trip to Macau in a contest organised by a local magazine called 8 Days. It didn’t turn out to be exactly free; I had to fork out $500+ in the end for airport taxes and other fees. Nevertheless, $500+ was a small prize to pay to experience how local tradition co-exists with opulence in this interesting East-meets-West place. That’s my dad grinning in the photos.

Did you go to the casinos?

Yes, but we didn’t stay there to play.
This may make me sound judgy, but I would be quite depressed if I were to be born and raised in Macau. It seems that the major engine of growth is the casinos. I can’t imagine growing up to work in these noisy workplaces where the dark side of human nature breeds

Yes, places like that and las vegas are fun to visit but couldn't imagine living there. I would like to visit Macau sometime though.

Crab porridge
Some kind of noodles
Bak kwa (BBQ pork)
I remember most distinctly the glass of red wine that was served before lunch, though. Because that was a custom passed down from its Portuguese colonial days
