I've been thinking about it, and I feel it may be a bit late for Nostr. I think activity pub has gathered most of the momentum and will come out on top in the future. What do you all think?
Note: I love Nostr, but I don't think it has the acceptance nor will it.

It's never too late for something better.

Very true of course. Was just a feeling I was going with today.

ActivityPub has the problem of your identity being tied to a server unlike on nostr. See this for more arguments.

I don't see that as a bad thing, necessarily. Sometimes you want centralized moderation. I have self-sovereignty on my own data by running my own Mastodon instance, but I can still use the greater network.
I do love Nostr's complete portability but to say one is better than the other, in my opinion, would be doing a disservice to the one being put down.

There isnt any reason the two cannot be interoperable with stuff like mostr. In fact, for ultimate robustness, I hope we end up with a load of different protocols bridged together

I have been educated in Nostr and it has everything to do with decentralization and censorship resistance. Also as a protocol it is strong. But every option is valuable and everyone chooses.
But recently I heard about Tox? According to what I have searched it has P2P Chat features, like a solution to Skype. Is it FOS? Only has a Chat function? What do you think?
Nostr has it all
reply
Tox is excellent for private and secure communication. Yes its open source and there are several versions of it available.
reply
Nah. Nostr will win.

We must be in it to win it.

The idea of any social network of known people that is publicly available may be undoable.

There's always room for improvement, no matter how late it may seem.

Maybe when everyone has to full-on kyc for the mainstream sm platforms ppl might wake up to the freedom of Nostr

Who said nostr was supposed to be used only for social networks?

I’ve not heard of activity pub. Given that, I’m already skeptical that it has more momentum than nostr, but maybe I’m out of the loop. Is there anything it does better?
reply
Activity pub is what is behind Mastodon and many other services.
reply
mastodon allows censorship on every server at the discretion of the owner and no moving your social graph. its kind of the opposite of nostr. would not consider them competitors.
reply
Nostr is just as easily censored at the relay. Just like Mastodon you can host your own which is the one true independence if you had to go that far.

Ah, thanks. I made a nostr client that filters out Bitcoin and nostr-related content and the vast bulk of what is left is cross-posting from mastodon, so I’m tempted to believe you now. Haha However, is the protocol behind it as censorship resistant as nostr? I wonder if all those folks cross-posting will just become nostr only posters if something dirty happens with activity pub.

It’s not as censorship-resistant since your identity is tied to a server.

There can always be two. People will find that nostr is better at some things. And it all comes back to how well it updates.
