Spicy topic.
I think so but it is rare and I think women are better at it than men.
The female friends I have had have always been part of a friend group (say in high school or college) or have been significant others of friends of mine.
I think I have only really had one female friend who wasn't a friend by association and who I have always had a strictly platonic relationship with.

Although it is a somewhat complicated situation, I think it is possible, but it is very, very complicated to see a case like this, generally and almost always there is a pattern of hidden interests, whether from the man towards the woman or from the woman towards the man.

Women can. Men have a more difficult time with this. Why? It's the same reason why there's a significant difference between the ease in dating with women vs. men: libidinal difference. A lot of women do enjoy sex, but they don't need it the way men do.
