I think the argument about privacy between the two tools was useful both to force people into thinking about the details and understand the pros and cons of both.
Both tools have notable negative aspects and the arguments in this post are quite missing the point. The argumentation have improved quite a lot since then :) To be clear, the other party made many comments and posts that were quite idiotic too. The tools are useful, but buggy and it really requires getting into details to understand what's up to not mess up any gained privacy - which obviously many users do mess up.
In terms of privacy and security I think it's useful to learn from what vendors at DNMs use, since their life literally depends on it. And they don't use either of those tools.
