I know, the headline sounds like something from the fringes, but this is mainstream and holy crap scary. My daughter's an adult, but I've got a niece who I know plays Roblox, and while I know every kid-friendly space on the internet has been targeted dating back to NeoPets, the stuff here is astounding.
I won't quote the whole thing, but even just an excerpt is horrifying:
Core to the problem is that Roblox’s social media features allow pedophiles to efficiently target hundreds of children, with no up-front screening to prevent them from joining the platform.
For example, in 2018, prior to Roblox going public, a 29-year-old was caught by police with 175 hours of video footage of him grooming and engaging in explicit behavior with 150 minors using online platforms, namely Roblox.
Media and non-profit exposés from 2020 to July 2024 revealed digital strip clubs, red light districts, sex parties and child predators lurking on Roblox. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation in 2024 labeled Roblox “a tool for sexual predators, a threat for childrens’ safety”.
Numerous criminal indictments from 2019-2024 allege that sexual predators groomed children in-game, ranging from 8-14 years old, then kidnapped, raped or traded sexual content with them.
Following years of scandals, we performed our own checks to see if the platform had cleaned up its act.
As a test, we attempted to set up an account under the name ‘Jeffrey Epstein’…only to see the name was taken, along with 900+ variations.
Many were Jeffrey Epstein fan accounts, including “JeffEpsteinSupporter” which had earned multiple badges for spending time in kid’s games. Other Jeff Epstein accounts had the usernames “@igruum_minors” [I groom minors], and “@RavpeTinyK1dsJE” [rape tiny kids].
I remember a couple years ago @supercyclone telling me about this 13yr old “girl” online that was asking him to send “her” pictures. He is a smart kid so he was skeptical and knows not to send anyone online personal info or pictures.
I said to him “I hate to break it to you but that probably wasn’t a girl. More likely a middle aged man”.

Yeah, almost certainly (backup possibility would be a pig butcher -- I've read a number of accounts of folks getting teens to eventually send naked pics and then blackmailing/extorting them, which is even worse than when it happens to adults). And raising smart kids and teaching them to be aware of requests like that is one of the best defenses.

Indeed. Definitely need to remain diligent.

parents need to stop letting their kids use the internet to the degree where you are unaware who they are talking to
obvi fuck these pedos but damn

My son was really into Roblox for a while, but it didn't last long. I can't remember every detail, but I think we must have kept all chat and communication features off because I never saw anyone message him or even say anything in the chat box.

From the point of view that this topic is addressed, it is quite complex... and it affects not only the children but the entire family because of the moral or psychological damage that can be done by knowing that one of your children can be or was the victim of a dirty and depraved pedophile!! My children are not yet old enough for video games and I confess that I am not a fan of online games!! That is why in the future I do not think I will be able to buy video games for my children, I prefer to play basketball with them 🏀🏀...
