State coercion never resolves the problems it sets out to address but only gives rise to new and worse problems. Rockwell presents many examples of ways in which, through the expansion of its own powers, the government is “becoming a source of the very problem that government is trying to correct.”
The problem is unforeseen consequences of actions. The State cannot see beyond the nose of the bureaucrats. I guess the way that is stated bothers me, too. The state is an imaginary construct of the gang in charge. The individual members of the gang are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Why do these gangster individuals think they can tell us what is hate and what is not hate? Isn’t that the opinion of the individuals involved? We used to say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.”
