I loved the audacity of what Prometheus attempted, and actually think Aliens as a franchise has a good track record for taking risks compared to most franchises (#2 was an action movie, #3 a prison horror flick, #4 a heist). I just don't think it landed for me. Too many characters who just were, well, dumb (Charlize Theron dying because she didn't realize she could turn left or right was the lowlight).
That said, the backstory/worldbuilding is fantastic, and adds to the universe.

You're right, the cast was too large. It must be an easy trap to fall into as a writer because they still do it when we all know they shouldn't.
