Yes, critical, but the supply can be any size and still be adequate. Increasing the amount of money in circulation doesn’t help anybody, especially if done quickly.

I think that privacy is the largest incentive to use cash in an electronically driven society! Do you know the saying, “I only take cold, hard cash”? It speaks to metallic objects in hand. BTC are good, too, but BTC is hard to hold in your hand. :)
