L402, created by Lightning Labs, is a protocol designed to automate payments over the Lightning Network with the help of AI. Additionally, it provides a key feature for paywalls, where users can pay to access premium content or services seamlessly. Here’s a potential flow:
- Alice requests L402 to generate an invoice to access premium content behind a paywall.
- Bob views the BOLT11 invoice and sends the required satoshis.
- Alice receives a notification that payment is complete, and Bob is granted access to the content.
This process is further enhanced with WebLN integration, allowing developers to build web applications that leverage automated invoicing and paywalls, creating a seamless user experience for digital payments.
Use Case Example: Paywalls for Content Creators
A content creator could use NWC and L402 to set up a paywall on their blog or video channel. Users can pay a small amount of satoshis to access exclusive content, and payments are processed instantly via Lightning. The creator can manage these transactions with ease, ensuring self-custody of all received funds.
