I like to start resolutions slowly in November & December. I feel there's a lot of planning, shifting schedules around, feeling bad for missing a day, and trial and error to new habits. So by the time New Year's comes around, it feels good to have the train going at a decent pace already.
And for things like the classic "gym resolution", if you start before NYE, by the time the swarm of resolutioners come around only to quit after a month, you won't be one of them
