I run my own CLN node, and I just now sent a payment of $180, or 257k sats, and paid less than 0.772 sat in fees. That fees, converted to USD, is $0.00054.
Conclusion: Run your own node. On any other wallet, like Phoenix, it would have been thousands of sats in fees (1163 sats to be exact, last time I made a similar sized payment).
good effing advice.
Now factor in the managing/open-close channels + extra electricity cost of running it. Same result?

I don't run a routing node. Just a few channels for spending money. So yes, it doesn't cost almost anything. That 1k sat saved in this transaction alone, is enough to open a channel if I needed to.

At 2sats/vbyte, fair enough
