Interesting comparison with 1990s Japan. The decadence/degeneracy of a civilization in decline. Been there mentally too, glad I didn't spend more years there.

It's directly related to monetary policy. Abnormally low interest rates allow for all kinds of behavior people wouldn't normally engage in if there were the proper costs associated with it. There are social consequences to economic policy.
Weimar Germany is another great example of this.
