Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse in the house of a strange man.
We saw Heretic last night, I thought it was very good.
It's a fantastically crafted movie about religion and belief that keeps you engaged throughout. Whether you're religious or not, or just interested in theology, this movie's definitely worth watching.
Hugh Grant has a great presence in the movie and should do more horror/thriller work. The suspense is spot on, the humor (there's not much) is actually funny, and the twists will keep you guessing.
I'd give it at least an 8/10.

Going to see this tonight! First time in a theater since the last Dune!
Edit: maybe the last time was Matrix 4 (because nothing can live up to it šŸ˜„)

I really enjoyed the first half. I was hoping itā€™d continue to philosophically escalate and build suspense more and more. Then in the end, nothing, a big fake out. All that suspense was for no reason and the big idea wasnā€™t heresy but facing fear in pursuit of truth or something. It didnā€™t end as well as it started for me - the middle to ending felt arbitrary so I emotionally divested - but it was enjoyable.
We saw it at a local theatre. We werenā€™t told until after, but the air conditioning had gone out, so most of us found ourselves drenched in sweat not realizing everyone else was suffering the same. A younger woman we talked to as we left said, ā€œI thought I had started menopause.ā€

Yeah I think the third act is the weakest, I just thought the rest carried it for me.

How is huh grant in this? Lately the roles he has had made him out to be scum.

He nailed the creepy guy performance in this one, he should transition to horror.
Are you referring to his roll as an Oompa Loompa? lol
reply

I'll watch. I want to see how Hugh Grant, a romantic comedy actor, fares in a dark story.

We watched the trailer last night. It looks super good.
I have a soft spot for Hugh Grant - he has a rare humble charisma. He's normally used as an everyman, but he'd do really well playing duplicitous characters if directed properly.

Just reading this piece, he talks about writing pages and pages about his character's bio, the dedication definitely shows in the movie:
Martinez: Did you create a character that we don't see in the film? A bio, so to speak. Grant: Yes. The older Iā€™ve gotten ā€“ the more acting I've done ā€“ itā€™s almost obsessive. So, yes, thereā€™s hundreds of pages of biography of this guy.
Martinez: Wait, wait. Hundreds of pages that you wrote? Grant: Yes. Yes. But while Iā€™m writing them, Iā€™m also connecting with the director, the writers saying, ā€œWhat do you think of this? What do you think of that?ā€ But a lot of itā€™s just me. And I prefer to keep it secret as well.
Martinez: Why do you do that? Grant: Thereā€™s two reasons. One, I have this belief that this intense marinade in the character and background somehow makes the character richer on camera. And the other is that Iā€™m so nervous about acting, especially as a new film looms towards me on the calendar that just doing four or five hours a day, every day, for weeks and months, calms me down.
Martinez: So Mr. Reed is charmingly creepy. Grant: Yeah.

Wow, this film looks like it would be nice to watch, but unfortunately I haven't watched it yet, hopefully this film will make me comfortable watching it.
