These are the joys of socialism: a dysfunctional mandatory health care system, useless mass transit systems, bloated and corrupt SOEs without competition, a swollen and unresponsive bureaucracy, unbridled corruption, and a vanishing middle class.
Had government greed and stupidity not chased away foreign investment, had it sold off the SOEs and forcd them to compete in free markets, had it not kowtowed to NGOs and choked off the economy in the blind rush to be praised as a “leader,” had it spent more time cleaning up corruption and lowering taxes, Indonesia would be a powerhouse economy right now.
Government — especially greedy, incompetent, corrupt, and insecure government — ruins everything. Indonesia has been set back 20 years, because government couldn’t leave well enough alone and respect the people’s right to make their own choices.
I mention a graft-ridden, ineffective, and utterly arbitrary judicial system?
Again, socialism strikes, this time through the instrumentality of the NGOs! I can see that the new administration will have to abolish the role of NGOs in this country, as other countries have done to clear up their problems. Of course, there are other problems to solve.
