So, youngster came to me with this calculation today at work. And maybe it was because I'm tired and it's late in the day and I'm out of math problem practice that we did for SPORTS in ~econ undergrad or because there was too much background music for me to think straight — or any other excuses — but what?!
  • Google is 89% of the search engine market.
  • Chrome is 57% of the browser market. = What percent of non-Chrome users search with Google?
Apparently 74%. (He assumes that all Chrome users search with Google)
My stupid brain went "32." Because all we know is 43% of browser market doesn't use Chrome, not what they search with.
Even ChatGPT laughs at me:
I just don't follow the last step... why do we have to divide by total non-Chrome users?
Always nice to be humbled by those recently out of school.
P.S. I'm sure @Shugard, being a teacher an all, can laugh at me for not following.

Because you're looking for the percentage of Google searchers who don't use Chrome.
Since 43% don't use Chrome, 74% of those 43% still search on Google.
