I agree, but I think Tech died somewhere between 2005 and 2015.
HN (and before it Slashdot), used to be filled with essentially quasi-cypher punks. The entire ethos was privacy, security, and decentralization.
Once social media hit, all that went out the window. Hundreds of thousands of "new hire" (millenials) flooded into Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc and they spent 24x7 figuring out how to spy on everyone.
In turn they became tools for .gov and well the rest is history.....
