More broadly, there's been a sharp increase in "deaths of despair". Understanding the driving factors is a very active area of social science research.
Thanks. I can now flaunt that I understand America much better. You know many people living in a different culture think that substance abuse and divorce are done for fun in America. But they are actually a kind of cultural pandemic.

It's a complex picture. There are definitely lots of frivolous people who don't take their marriages seriously and abuse drugs for fun. I would argue that's also part of the same cultural pathology.
