Chesterton, along with C.S. Lewis, suggests that it would be better to live under a robber baron than under an omnipotent moral busybody. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, and their cupidity may be satiated, but those who torment others for their own good will do so without end, with the approval of their own conscience.
I equate the tyrant to the moral busybody because they seem to be much the same.
