You don’t have to watch Zombieverse Season 1 to enjoy Season 2. But having said that, I find that I enjoy the current season tremendously because I view it as an improvement over the first season.
Zombieverse Season 2 is a replica of the D&D virtual experience. Parachute some celebrities into a makeshift zombie world and let them navigate the various quests. Season 2 picks up from where its predecessor leaves off - just that the celebrities are whisked off to picturesque Jeju Island.
For a production of such massive scale, I’m surprised that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The cast is composed of survivors from Season 1 and newbies, but they soon mix well together, like your favourite fruits blended to yield a yummy smoothie. The most memorable scenes ironically arise from unexpected moments of hilarity. Watching everyone try to keep a straight face and respond solemnly when their comrade is snoring loudly for real was freaking awesome. Another highlight was them delivering eulogies without breaking into laughter when another cast member - who played a half-zombie - had “passed on”. I loved it even more when the production team played along with the cast’s spontaneous outbursts of genuineness, captioning the scenes with tongue-in-cheek remarks like “He’s too sad to even look up”.
Apart from the charismatic cast, I also liked that the quests are distinctly differently from each other. What’s more, the zombies had different quirks and behaved differently based on their environment. Have you wondered how dancing zombies would look like? Or a parkour zombie? Or zombies who can only run in a straight line? Watching the cast determine the zombies’ characteristics and respond accordingly made the viewing experience stellar.
In all, Zombieverse Season 2 was a fun series to watch. Perfect if you had to babysit your children and didn’t have much bandwidth for serious watching. True story.
