I don't mind having different combinations of buttons enabling different moves but shooting and passing should be simple. Press the button to shoot if the guy is open and a good shooter he probably makes the shot.
I remember having a couple of different ball-handling moves, which is fine. You want to feel like you're in control to an extent. Even hold and release shooting is fine, but it shouldn't be super idiosyncratic.
One gameplay mechanic that might be cool is a Fallout or Hitman style slow-motion where you can set up fancy passes, shots, or handles for appropriate players: i.e. Jokic, Harden, Kyrie, respectively.
