Yatsushiro is known for being Japan’s top producer of tomatoes. That’s my daughter inspecting the quality of the tomatoes.
However, not all Yatsushiro farmers are tomato farmers. Some of them grow lettuce. 🥬 I had the pleasure of watching them hard of work, pruning the not-so-presentable leaves and packing the appealing and appetising lettuce into wooden boxes.
I noticed that the farmer’s name was indicated on the wooden box. This brought me back to a time when I was dining at a Japanese fast food restaurant called Mos Burger. I then noticed that the ingredients were local produce as the names of the Yatsushiro farmers were prominently featured. I think it’s great that a process exists in which the nameless farmer at least makes his name known so that people know who to show appreciation to. (Or if you are the jaded sort, publishing your name puts a target on your back, so you will be inclined to pull up your socks so that you don’t have to be accountable for any food poisoning incidents.)
Are you a lettuce fan?
