There is a difference between wanting power to rule over others and wanting power to rule over yourself.

So I don’t think this was the slam dunk you think it was. I think you didn’t try to understand what he meant and just jumped to conclusions because you’re already convinced that you’re right and he’s wrong because he is a "leftist to the core."

But of course I don’t know the full context so I might be wrong, but this is just my impression from reading your story.
