Ok, I think it's a bit much to list one or two, but off the top of my head, I would say some of the best gaming tracks, by franchise, would be

sonic (the old-school ones) streets of Rage (although i thought 3's music was a bit shit) Donkey Kong Country series Street Fighter 2, almost all the themes were incredible, apart from Dhalsim's Zelda, almost all games, although i probably have most nostalgia for OOt mega man - some real bangers Castlevania TMNT shredder's revenge, incredible soundtrack, especially 'screw loose'

and finally, one of the tracks that hit super fucking hard was 'that's the way it is' at the end of Arthur's part of rd2, holy shit did that one get me. It was It was such an emotional journey and then getting blasted with that tear-jerker!

what are some favourites among stackers?

I've only played Candy Crush Saga so religiously and I believe that has the best music.

reply

i suppose if you have only played that, then by default it is the best game music lol

Six Feet Thunder is my ringtone:

It’s from Crypt of the Necrodancer, a rhythm game.

DUSK, StarCraft 2 and Need for Speed also have very memorable soundtracks.

reply

StarCraft 2 Terran them!

reply

that is a pretty dope track

Original Halo had amazing music but if we are going real old school I would say Sonic.

while super old school, i feel it still holds up for sure

007 Goldeneye pause music

reply

This was so good. Why do I remember it so well still?

reply

it was suoer relaxing being able to just pause while being attacked by hordes of guards during an alarm lol

I can never choose a best and I'm sure other stackers will name good titles but I'll go with a game I played (relatively) recently game with a soundtrack that impressed me:

Nier:Automata

Video game music has come a long way to respectability, now with orchestras and live shows (that I recommend if you like a franchise or composer in particular). It always impressed me the quality of music they were able to compose and produce on old hardware with all their limitations. It was proof that limitations breed creativity.

i think i saw switch up do a review on that saying it was an excellent game, haven't played i tyet tho

reply

it is excellent.

I don't wanna say too much about it, but I will say I underestimated the game at first. I played it because a lot of people wouldn't stop yapping about it. Admittedly but to be frank, some people I consider to be on the shallow consoomer side of things. I know that's a prejudicey way to put it. I stand humbled.

Then when I got some hours in, it clicked that it was deeper and more clever than I expected by a lot. The game designer behind it is known to be a peculiar and eccentric character, and now I know why.

it's art.

I literally cannot say more than that and I might already have fucked up by hyping it so hard as to subtract from your potential experience, but those who played it will get it.

reply

i will add it to my 'to buy' list when on sale

fuck yes, how did i forget MI, one of my all-time favourite franchises

never heard of this one, very quirky!

Most of my favourites have been mentioned already, but I haven’t seen anyone mention Shadow of the Colossus which should definitely be on the list.

to this day i have only ever played the snes FF games and i forgot they also had some excellent composition. as soon as i saw that clip i remember the chancellor lol

also, made me remember chrono trigger, which also had great music

reply

Some SNES games are, without a doubt, among the best games of all time. Developers managed to extract all the potential that technology at the time allowed. The first game I thought of was Chrono Trigger, but I remembered this part of Final Fantasy and wanted to pay homage

reply

it's true, a ton of great franchises were born in that era too

Kamil Orman-Janowski and the entire Path of Exile (1 and 2) soundtrack.

Here’s one of my favorites from the first game:

Ghosts 'n Goblins.

I'd be amazed if anyone remembers this, but I used to love the music to 'Monty on the Run' on the C64 when I was a teen!

That was by Rob Hubbard, he had an amazing list of compositions for early games! His work still sounds great despite such limited hardware of the time.

Pretty much the entire soundtrack of Fallout 3

when someone links stuff like this the expectations goes up and the magic is kind of lost. But the Deux Ex soundtrack is decent. Other than that theres https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3SBTQQ0GJ0

can't go wrong with Duke

GTA: San Andreas... those radios were so good and they really grow on you

reply

Not exactly what you are after, as I don’t think it was composed for the game, but entering Mexico in the original RDR is a beautiful experience. The music fits perfectly.
