For those of you who do not know about the absolute mess that is RFK Stadium here is a key update. The stadium hasn't been used in close to a decade now and is in such bad condition that they have to knock it down. "Random fires" have broken out in the stadium over the years likely caused by the homelessness crisis the City has been grappling with so year the stadium really needs to go.
Since it is on Federal Land though that has always been a huge issue in doing anything with the area so it has just sat, this lease extension (that the House had passed MONTHS ago) will enable the team, the city, and developers to come together and figure out the move. There is a current lease that the city has but it only was for 14 more years making the whole project unworkable until now.
Early Saturday morning, the U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan bill by unanimous consent that would allow the federal government to lease more than 170 acres of land to the district at the site where RFK Stadium resides. It greatly increases the chances of the Commanders building a new stadium at the site, although more hurdles remain before that's a reality.
