Transportation officials from New Jersey and New York received the federal sign-off to go ahead with an auspicious $10 billion Manhattan bus terminal transformation in Midtown.
The bi-state Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the existing terminal, said Wednesday that the Federal Transit Administration issued a “Record of Decision” following an “exhaustive” environmental review of the project’s environmental impact statement.
Ahh yes nothing causes more project delays and cost overruns than an environmental impact statement!
The project’s $271 million first phase entails constructing two new roadway decks over areas of Dyer Avenue and the Lincoln Tunnel Expressway in Manhattan, which is slated to start early next year, according to a press announcement.
The current terminal is used by NJ Transit buses, as well as Coach, Greyhound, Megabus, Peter Pan, Rockland Coaches and other bus lines.
Port Authority officials are racing to get federal loan approval while President Joe Biden is still in office, according to a report last month by Gothamist.
Transportation officials have been trying for the past decade and discussing for even longer the process of replacing the 73-year-old bus terminal, which serves as a hub for commuters and travelers entering and leaving Manhattan.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said that over 250,000 people use the terminal on any given weekday.
Bus transit still cost effective way to travel. Kudos to NY, NJ to working on this much needed upgrade!
I have a dumb question: is Port Authority a clean station?

It’s like a department of transportation but on steroids. Basically the governing body of various large infrastructure transportation assets
