The United States Department of the Interior this week said it will invest more than $849 million into upgrading water infrastructure in the western U.S.
The 77 Bureau of Reclamation projects, located across Arizona ($41 million), California ($364.9 million), Colorado ($63.2 million), Idaho ($12.5 million), Montana ($81.7 million), New Mexico ($187.9 million), North Dakota $32.5 million), Oregon ($2.1 million), South Dakota ($5.2 million), Utah ($400,000) and Washington ($57.9 million), will address:
  • Restoration of canal capacity;
  • Water treatment in Tribal communities and elsewhere ;
  • Replacement of hydropower production equipment and improvements to hydropower generation;
  • Maintenance for project buildings;
  • Water conveyance and storage improvements; and
  • Safety enhancements.
More than $118 million, according to the department, will go to 14 projects in the Colorado River Basin where communities have been dealing with the impacts of a 24-year drought.
