people like to compare the US etc with Rome in failure, but very seldom mention that the Roman Empire was in a state of failure/decline for several centuries
we're in the part where everything just sucks a bit more every few years
To misquote Hemingway;
“How did the Roman Empire fall?”
“Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.”
Perhaps we won’t get a similar 300+ year decline due to technology… everything runs faster. Including the collapse.
The book make some interesting points about the changes in the Roman Empire - particularly the emerging elite at the periphery - through the centuries from apogee to demise.
