I lay much of the blame on the American right wing for doing a piss poor job refuting the ideas of Marx.
Edit: One plus for immigration is that many that have escaped Marxism know first hand how terrible it actually is.

I think they got caught off guard with the cultural (race, sex-based) Marxism, because they were so focused on traditional economic Marxism.

People romanticize so many bad ideas.
The people that actually feel its effects know what it is like.
Hence why they are actively running away.

These ideas can sound good to people. Specifically to a certain type of person in my experience. Usually those drawn to art with higher sympathy for other people. They also appeal to the selfish and lazy, the greedy and envious. Its not all bad people or good. Same goes for freedom. Freedom appeals to people that are morally good or bad.
