This is an interview with the creator and maintainer of bikeindex.org that helps people report and track stolen bikes.
The most surprising and frustrating thing I took away from this podcast is how terrible facebook marketplace is. The interviewee talked about this notorious stolen bike seller in Mexico (bikes stolen from the US) who heavily uses facebook marketplace and making millions of dollars. The guys from Bike Index amassed tons of actual evidence and even got the feds involved, but despite how many times they reach out to facebook asking them to suspend and deplatform this stolen bike reseller, nothing happens and the guy is able to continue selling on facebook marketplace.
He apparently got a chance to talk with an engineer from Meta and this was how the conversation went: "I had this long back-and-forth with this guy. Here’s my proof, here’s my Excel sheets. Download a zip file. Here’s the fucking indict — like, proof, proof, proof. Can you please just kick this guy off your platform? He said, no. I said, why? ... We’re really hoping to tackle this with artificial intelligence. I was like, fuck you, buddy. We’re giving you actual priceless intelligence that is backed by proof, that is backed by indictments, that is backed by screenshots, that is backed by — I could put you on a conference call with 150 victims right now. I’m giving you actual intelligence. Just do your job. He’s like, well, we’re really hoping to tackle this with AI. It’s an insult. It’s just a complete joke. Nobody’s driving that bus."
