Round and round we go!
The Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs wasn't terribly exciting. Hopefully we will get some better games this weekend in the divisional round.
What has been exciting to watch is the early offseason NFL coaching carousel. A lot of teams are making changes to coaches and coordinators with more likely to come on the coordinator side as current folks move on or are let go when new head coaches come in.
The Patriots recently hired Mike Vrabel as their new coach but the following teams still have head coaching vacancies: Cowboys, Raiders, Jaguars, Bears, Saints and Jets.
Some veteran coaches likely to get a look are Mike McCarthy (just fired by the Cowboys), Pete Carroll, Robert Saleh and even Rex Ryan.
In terms of rookie coaches the most likely candidates to get first time coaching jobs are Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Deion Sanders, Joe Brady and Kellen Moore. It will also be interesting to see if Vikings DC Brian Flores will get another crack at being an NFL head coach.
So stackers, who do you think will land these open positions? Any dark horse candidates that you think could be surprise hires. Do you think any more coaches will be fired?
Let's hear your hot takes.
Sats for all, GR
Who is going to LV @Undisciplined?
reply
I think their first choice is Ben Johnson and they're pulling out all the stops to get him. Pete Carroll seems to be the frontrunner, though, according to those who follow the team.
That both want the job is pretty great, as far as I'm concerned. That's the value of having the coolest look and the craziest fans.
reply
I would go with a younger guy than Carroll but I don't think they can go wrong with either of those guys. I was reading an espn article and the author projected Ben Johnson would go to the Raiders.
reply
I'm leaning towards Carroll, just for the sake of having someone who definitely knows how to do the job at a high level.
Johnson is much more exciting, but who knows if he'll be a competent HC?
This team desperately needs to start putting some wins on the board.
reply
I think with Carroll you also get a good defensive mind, a players coach and experience. You can then try to find the next Ben Johnson to be your OC. Only issue with Carroll is he is 73. Really more of a bridge guy than the guy you plan to have around for the next decade.
reply
Exactly. The plan would have to be that Carroll is building a program to hand of to his successor.
reply
You could always forgo having a QB, draft Graham, have the best D Line in the NFL and let Carroll build you the legion of Boom 2.0 and try to win every game 13-10.
reply
I'd be fine with that. AOC would be perfectly competent in that kind of system.
Relatedly, my dad really wants them to take Jeanty and build up a monster running game.
that only works if you get away with PEDs
Ben Johnson will be a bust as HC
reply
Can Ben Johnson hire good assistants?
That is the one common trait among all great coaches/managers across all sports
reply
What makes you think so?
reply
most 'hot' HC prospects are disappointments especially the 'great' offensive minds
as HC, half of your time is spent on non football matters
edit: at least half of your time is spent on off the field matters: ownership, media, medical, insurance, ticketing, travel, marketing, promotions, etc.
reply
Yeah, that's definitely my concern.
The flip side is that if you don't get one of these guys as your head coach, then you'll never have a stable offense, because any good OC will soon leave for a HC job.
Ben Johnson.
Brady (part owner) has been on a hard recruitment drive for Johnson. If he wants that job, I think it's his.
reply
Admit it. You just want him out of your division. Haha
reply
It sure would help. Unless Flo goes to the bears as HC... That would be less than ideal.
reply
I didn't mention Joe Brady. What do you think @BlokchainB? Will he get HC opportunities or does he need to prove it for another year?
reply
I think he will. He did really good things with this offense but you have to ask yourself is it Brady or is it Josh Allen?
reply
Mostly Allen but I think he has done a great job. I just wonder if teams will want to see more and not hire him because they think it is Allen like you mentioned. Hard to argue an MVP level QB makes their coaches look better than they are. I mean Andy Reid is the best coach in the league now. He was good before but didn't become the best until he had Mahomes.
reply
Jerry Jones has gone rogue. It's crazy to me how he's running that franchise.
reply
who owns the team?
shocking that the owner wants to run the franchise
reply
Lots of owners are hands off, Jerry is defacto GM as well as owner. He holds all the cards and dictates how the cowboys are. Rumours are he wants Dion Sanders, and he also wants Witten on the staff in some capacity, it's very much Jerry just hiring his friends.
reply
Jerry is a smart businessman, one reason why Cowboys are the most valuable NFL franchise and most valuable in North America
He must be doing something right
edit: Can you make dinner for me? I am buying all the ingredients
reply
I am not a big fan of McCarthy. I don't think it is a terrible move for them but the fact that whoever comes in will have to be a Yes man to Jerry probably means regardless how good they are, they won't get much more out of that loser franchise.
Flores got cooked by McVay and Stafford. You think he still gets a HC job? His only drawback is sometimes his over aggression works against him. You can't blitz Stafford, you need to cover and get home with 4 or 5. He is probably best in the league against the blitz. Flores played right into his hands. Don't get me wrong it is not all on the D. They weren't terrible. Sam and the offense blew that game but the D could have been better too.
I still think Flores gets a HC job.

5 years and 0 playoff wins

What about Kyle Shanahan?
reply
He and Lynch will both be back with the 49ers. The owner has already said that but they are looking for a new DC and ST coordinator.
I will say this season is probably the first time I didn't think Shanahan was a top 5 coach in the league. He was far too loyal to his DC and ST coach and did not make the adjustments needed on offense after injuries started piling up.
He is a good coach but he has to prove he is still a great coach or if the league has figured him out.
reply
💯
reply
One more playoff win and McVay surpasses Shanahan in playoff wins. I am sure that would piss Shanahan off. Haha
reply
Let’s have McVay get a second Super Bowl win before Shanahan first!
reply
That's probably not going to happen but I will be rooting for them this week.
reply
We need your support!
reply
I want Glenn for the Jets, but I suspect the Saints will nab him. For the others, still no real sense of who's going to get hired. In the case of the Jets, I do hope they line up a good GM first (and soon).
reply
He wasn't really on my radar until the last few weeks of the season and seeing how he adapted and schemed to win big games even though his D was decimated by injuries.
