I found this graphic on X, unfortunately without an exact source. Nevertheless, it confirms what we all know and can verify economically: the place of production is no longer the place of innovation. China has become a real magnet for patents and innovation, no matter how you get them. We must offer better framework conditions in our countries in the West, push back state activities and interventionism, reduce taxes and finally live meritocratic values so that innovators can successfully produce here.
In light of Vivek and Elon's remarks about skilled labor in tech, it would be fascinating to see an attempt at disaggregating place of origin by nationality of inventor: i.e.
I'm sure more of the tech development in the west is done by Chinese immigrants (or children of immigrants) than the share of manufacturing in China done by western immigrants.
There's a real rise of Asians going on and it isn't confined to their native countries.

This is an important domestic debate. The EU already solved the problem by provoking an invasion of academics from the Maghreb and the Middle East.

They may want to finetune the quality-quantity tradeoff on their approach.
Actually, some of my Chinese grad school friends mentioned being uninterested in going to European schools (which used to be common for Chinese students). The reason was the influx of Middle Easterners and the corresponding rise in violent crime rates.

They are known to steal patents. But the USA doesnt have the ability to manufacture because of how much everything costs. Eventually this will have to change, because companies are getting sick of china stealing products.
